Job Summary:
The City of Temiskaming Shores is seeking a Superintendent of Environmental Services to play a key operational leadership role within the Public Works Department. This position is responsible for providing operational oversight of the City of Temiskaming Shores’ water, wastewater, and solid waste services. The role ensures compliance with all applicable provincial legislation, supports asset management, manages staff and contractors, and maintains safe, reliable, and efficient municipal infrastructure. This position requires the knowledge, equipment experience and appropriate qualifications to safely perform maintenance, repair and installation work on various classifications of water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems.
Role and Responsibilities:
- Responsible to organize and supervise day-to-day operations of the water distribution and wastewater collection systems.
- Support the Director of Environmental Services with the direct supervision of personnel, including the hiring, training, performance monitoring and discipline in accordance with policies, procedure and bylaws of the municipality.
- Frequent administrative requirements including drafting and modifying reports, spreadsheets, schedules, budgets, and emails.
- Prepare and modify schedules for maintenance activities within approved programs and monitor work progress against established benchmarks.
- Responsible to identify work requirements and must strategically schedule crews, utility companies, and contractors to achieve optimal project success.
- Must monitor maintenance activities, ensures compliance with work schedules, budgets, and compliance with all applicable legislation.
- Promptly investigate and resolve complaints and service requests from the public regarding maintenance work.
- Prepare notices and information with regards to scheduled maintenance work.
- Responsible to draft reports and other required information as requested by the Ministry of the Environment Conservation and Parks (MECP).
- Support the Director of Environmental Services to achieve strategic goals as outlined in the City’s Asset Management Plan.
- Support the Director of Environmental Services with strategic annual budget preparation by providing data with reference to required materials, labour and equipment that are projected.
- Ensure the safe and efficient operation of all vehicles and equipment and that safety procedures are maintained in accordance with all relevant legislation.
Qualifications
and Education Requirements
· Successfully completed Grade 12 or equivalent.
· Post-Secondary education in a related discipline is preferred.
· Five (5) years of related experience in public works maintenance and/or construction operation, with specific experience in all aspects of water and wastewater operations, including equipment operation, materials specifications.
· Three (3) years of supervisory or leadership experience.
· Experience acting as an Overall Responsible Operator as defined by provincial regulation.
· Valid Ontario driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
· Minimum Class 1 water distribution system certificate with the ability for advancement.
· Minimum Operator in Training wastewater collection system certificate with the ability for advancement.
· Certified Road Superintendent Designation would be an asset.
· Bilingualism would be considered an asset.
