Job type: Contract – 35 hours per week - Up to 6 months

What you will do in the role
· Write court documents, such as affidavits, applications, motions, and briefs in response to new and ongoing child protection files.
· Review and assist child protection staff in the creation of warrants for removals. Assistance in locating parents for the execution of the warrant may also be required on a case-by-case basis.
· Liaise with child protection staff to develop understanding of evidentiary standards and vet case notes and court documents for hearsay evidence that is not admissible.
· Develop and maintain external relationships with community services for the purpose of locating clients for service. This includes shelters, Ontario Works, and different jails and penitentiaries across the province.
· Assist child protection staff in locating clients for the purposes of signing Customary Care Agreements and act as a safety measure in attending with child protection staff to more hostile locations.
· Monitor the criminal docket to provide information to child protection staff in relation to clients that have been incarcerated and for awareness of their location for the purpose of service.
· Develop and maintain positive relationships with the First Nations and their counsel by updating service policies, counsel of records and ensuring prompt notification to legal counsel of identification hearings.
· Develop and maintain positive relationships with court staff in all districts for timely responses in relation to situations of bringing children to a place of safety.
· Ensure the completion of all court orders in relation to court endorsements.
· Remain up to date on changes in the legislation and advise child protection staff in changes to court policies and procedures to reflect new case law developments.
· Assist in the training of child protection staff in relation to drafting warrants, different agreements and their legal standards for validity, and in trial preparation for cross-examination.
· In the absence of the In-House Legal Counsel, provide child protection staff legal information and direction on court files, relying upon prior discussions and knowledge of the process being sought.
· In the absence of the In-House Legal Counsel, attend court appearances for to be spoken to dates, to set the next step, or for first appearances. Also, when an agent is attending on behalf of the In-House Legal Counsel, attend court to monitor the court file progress and provide a report.

What you bring to the table
· Bachelor’s degree in law or equivalent, with a minimum of 3 years experience.
· Experience working with First Nations families and communities.
· Being knowledgeable regarding all current legislation which impacts the provision of services to Indigenous families and children.
· Must produce clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening.
· The ability to speak a First Nation language is considered a major asset.
· Demonstrate excellent planning, organizational, and administrative skills.
· Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills to liaise with a variety of internal and external contacts, oral and written communication skills.
· Must possess a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s licence, be willing to travel, able to work flexible hours and able to work independently.
